CEFUROXIME 500 MG TABLET

DESCRIPTION

Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the lungs, nose, throat, ears, skin, soft tissues, and urinary tract. It belongs to the second-generation cephalosporin group and works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, thereby killing bacteria. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria but does not treat viral infections.

INDICATION

• Pharyngitis/Tonsilitis : Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections that cause swelling and soreness in the throat and tonsils. If it is the infection affects both the throat and the tonsils, then it would be called pharyngotonsillitis. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and/or pharyngotonsillitis.
   

• Acute bacterial otitis media : Otitis media (AOM), is an infection of the middle ear (the area behind the eardrum), common in infants and young children. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat acute otitis media caused by bacteria.
   

• Sinusitis : Sinusitis is the swelling of membranes that line your nose and surrounding sinuses. It is often caused by bacteria and sometimes, viruses and fungi. You may experience a stuffed nose and pain or pressure behind your eyes, nose, cheeks, or forehead. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat bacterial sinusitis and provides relief in three to eight weeks.
   

• Bronchitis : Bronchitis is the swelling and irritation of bronchial tubes that regulates air passage in the lungs. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat bronchitis caused by bacteria. It is also used to treat a sudden worsening of chronic bronchitis (long-term inflammation of the bronchi) and subsequent episodes of bronchitis. 
   

• Urinary tract infection : An infection in any part of your urinary system (kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra) is called a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs are the most common infections in humans and women are at greater risk of getting this infection. UTIs are caused by bacteria and in some cases, viruses or fungi. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat urinary tract infections caused by bacteria.
   

• Lyme disease : Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. This infection is spread to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks that carries the bacteria. This condition can be treated in a few weeks by using antibiotics. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used for the treatment of Lyme disease.
   

• Skin and soft tissue infections : Skin and soft tissue infections occur when the bacteria invade the skin and its supporting structures. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat all skin infections including abscess caused by bacteria.
   

• Impetigo : Impetigo is a skin infection caused by bacteria that is more common in young children. It appears as red sores on the face, especially around your nose and mouth, and on hands and feet. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat impetigo.
   

• Gonorrhoea : Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoea bacteria that infects both men and women. It spreads during vaginal, oral or anal sex without using a condom or other barrier method. Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) is used to treat the gonococcal infection.

MECHANISM OF ACTION 

Cefuroxime 500 mg, like other cephalosporins, works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located in the bacterial cell membrane. These proteins are essential for the cross-linking of peptidoglycan, a vital component of the bacterial cell wall. By disrupting this process, cefuroxime weakens the cell wall, causing it to become unstable. This leads to bacterial cell lysis and death, particularly in actively growing bacteria. Cefuroxime is effective against a broad range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms due to its stability against many beta-lactamases.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Drug-Drug Interactions: Cefu-500 Tablet (Cefuroxime 500 mg) may interact with medicines such as antacids, acid-reducing medicines, probenecid, and mycophenolate. Inform your healthcare professional about all medicines being taken.

Drug-Food Interactions: Take Cefu-500 Tablet as directed by your healthcare professional. Inform them about any supplements or mineral-containing products you are taking.

Drug-Disease Interactions: Inform your healthcare professional if you have kidney disease, liver disease, colitis, or a history of severe allergic reactions to antibiotics before taking Cefu-500 Tablet.
